TOUR NEWS

It is mid-February, which means I am just about to leave for England with the Rikkyo University chapel choir.  Long time readers will know that we do these tours every two to three years.  It has been three years since the last tour, and this time I have a group of 53 singers to shepherd through the countryside.  Our first stop will be Godmanchester, a village outside the city of Cambridge.  The photo at left is St Mary’s Church, where the choir will be performing a concert on Feb 20 (Saturday, 7:0o pm).  Please feel free to drop in if in the neighborhood!  I will be blogging from the tour as usual, so stay tuned later next week.

WALKING NEWS

I have been busy trying to sort out all the tour arrangements as well as the things that need to be accomplished before departure.  I have found time for a bit of walking on the side, though.  Since my last long walk was down the Shakujii River, this time I decided to walk upstream for a few hours to see what might be found.  I ended up at a fine park – Shakujii Park, with its ponds and walking paths.  Next?  Probably following the river on up from the park.  But that will have to wait until after I return from the tour, I suppose.

AND FINALLY, A RANT 最後に

I’ll speak frankly for a bit, if you don’t mind.  The racist drumbeat I hear via the news media from the Republican party of the USA has got my blood boiling.  In particular, the not-so-clever idea to ban all Muslims from entering the “land of the free,” the country supposedly founded on the concept of freedom of religion for all has me wondering how and when half of the population took leave of its senses.  “Make America great again” and “America for the Americans” (read “for white Christians”) are phrases that should not be lightly batted about in political campaigns.  Living in Japan, there is not a lot I can do about what transpires in the US.  However, I can deliver a message to my fellow humans that all Americans don’t think this way, and the many of us do, indeed, love our neighbors.  To prove it, I went to the Tokyo Mosque yesterday and sat around talking for an hour or so with the Muslims I found there.  We shared stories, and did our best to knock down stereotypes and communicate.  I am sure I didn’t solve any world problems, but quite enjoyed the hospitality of the mosque and hope to go back for more communication.  Photos of the beautiful building:
